At the UCHealth Hearing and Balance Clinic, we offer a well-rounded fourth-year audiology externship.

The fourth-year rotation is a one-year commitment. Most externs begin their placement in June, depending on their academic schedules. Our fourth-year placement is designed to provide a well-rounded experience in all aspects of audiology including adult diagnostics and amplification, pediatric diagnostics and amplification, adult and pediatric cochlear implants, and adult and pediatric vestibular evaluations. From day one, externs will rotate through all these specialties. In the spring, externs will have the opportunity to rotate through the Hearing and Balance Clinic at the Boulder Health Center to gain experience with precepting first and second-year audiology students. This is a wonderful opportunity for those externs who anticipate mentoring/precepting students in the future. We are a facility that follows evidence-based practice and believes in the importance of research, continuing education, outreach and patient education.

Unfortunately, at this time, we do not offer compensation/stipend for the fourth-year rotation. However, there is an opportunity for one fourth-year extern to receive a small audiology endowment scholarship.

The Richard D. Wyant Endowed Award in Audiology was established in 2022 to provide annual awards to one fourth-year Audiology Extern at the University of Colorado Hearing and Balance Center.

The award will aim towards a merit or need based scholarship of $4,000 to encourage underrepresented students and students with disabilities to perform their externship at the University of Colorado Hospital. All audiology students/trainees nationwide will be eligible to apply for the award. In collaboration with receiving the award, the recipients will be expected to carry out a diversity initiative within audiology, working with a faculty mentor of their choice to develop the diversity initiative proposal, with an aim to present their work in a regional or national conference.
